When a casino
dishwasher is murdered in a parking structure by a group of hooded
criminals wearing contorted animal masks, Catherine and Grissom process
the scene of the crime. His casino I.D. card remains, but the group has
stolen his car keys, cash, cell phone and wallet. Meanwhile, across town Las Vegas tourist Jessica Hershbaum is walking
home from a night out on the town. She is attacked by the same group.
When Catherine and Grissom arrive at the second crime scene, Grissom
finds a car key on the ground. He tries to open the door of a nearby
Honda and realizes it is the first victim’s car. Back at the Lab, Sid
finds a woman’s toenail lodged between the victim’s two front teeth.
Catherine starts to circle shoe treads on the victim’s clothing. In the
hospital, Sara notices a bruise on Jessica’s chest. Jessica confirms
that she heard many voices during her beating, but no names. In the
interim, Sofia
questions a clerk at a liquor store that was recently robbed. The clerk
says that a huge group of hooded teenagers were to blame. Sara confirms
that the two crimes are related as she found similar shoe treads on both
sets of clothing. She also notes that a Reebok tennis shoe, Dr. Marten
boot and Steve Madden stiletto are all shoes that match the treads.
Later that night, Greg heads over to the liquor store to process the
scene. On his way, he sees a mob beating a single person in an alley.
After radioing in for support, he tries to break up the fight and takes
a terrible beating but saves the innocent victim. While trying to save
the victim, Greg ends up killing one of the hooded members: Demitrius
James.
When
the team arrives at the scene, Greg mentions that he scratched one of
the attackers so Sara takes evidence from his nails. He also states that
one of the attackers spit on his vest. Catherine gets the printout of
all incoming calls from the victim’s phone on the night of his death. At
12:30 p.m., after he was killed, a Cha Cha Romero called the phone.
Catherine notices that the buckle on Cha Cha’s purse matches the bruises
on Jessica and the victim. Cha Cha confesses that she is part of the
group along with her friend Tara. When Nick visits Tara he notes that her toe is wrapped in a bandage. He
also finds the victim’s cell phone amongst her belongings. Later, Nick
brings Tara’s belongings back to the lab. Catherine sees a text
message on the victim’s phone that is from Pig (the leader of the mob)
telling his followers where the next beating will be held. The team gets
ready to raid the scene and capture the criminals, while Greg mulls over
the life he took while trying to save an innocent victim.
