Catherine finds
herself in a courthouse fighting to put a man who she believes is a
murderer behind bars. Defendant Jay Finch has been charged with killing
his mother and two other unknown females. Catherine postulates that
Finch stabbed his mother and the other females with a kitchen knife and
then finished them off with a gun. His blood was found on the tang of
the knife which he waited five days to hand over to the police.
Catherine notes that although a gun wasn’t found in the Finch home an
empty gun case was found in the defendant’s closet. Much to Catherine’s
disgust the defendant is found not guilty however Catherine and Nick
leave Las Vegas
to investigate the case further. Catherine’s goal is to find the other
two victims and charge the suspect again. While an unopened case leads
she and Nick to Larkston, Nevada another case in which a suspect
admitted to is reopened. Catherine and Nick realize that a woman and her
mother were killed, stabbed first and then shot, in a house. The
daughter’s young son crawled underneath the sink to hide. Catherine
finds out that the same caliber bullet was used in each case; however
they were unable to compare them due to the damage done to one set.
Meanwhile, Catherine visits Robert Guffey in jail, the convicted killer
of the mother and daughter, and he tells her didn’t do it. Guffey says
he was coerced into confessing a crime he didn’t commit. He notes that
he entered the house and checked the women’s pulses and then left.
Catherine brings in Danny, the young boy who witnessed the murders, and
asks him to retrace the killer’s steps. Danny says he knew the killer
ate a cookie. Catherine swabs the cookie jar for prints. Nick confirms
that the blood found on the knife was from the deceased mother and
daughter confirming that Jay Finch killed all three women.
After Grissom leaves
for sabbatical he receives another crime scene miniature which might
remain unopened until he returns to the lab.
