Lana Adalian finds her sister, Christina, dead in her home – gunshot wound to the head, Christina’s baby alone in his crib staring at his mother’s body. A signed suicide note is nearby, the gun still in Christina’s hand. Catherine and Sara arrive at the apparent suicide but find blood spatter on the gun that is inconsistent with Christina’s clean hands, indicating the gun was planted. It appears this suicide is actually murder.

Scratches on the front door and rare marble dust at the scene lead Catherine and Warrick to the victim’s ex-boyfriend, who says she claimed her pregnancy was an immaculate conception. Autopsy shows proof of a C-section but reveals that Christina’s DNA is not a match to her baby, a discovery which leads the CSIs to a controversial and unconventional adoption organization, and the identity of Christina’s killer.

Meanwhile, Ecklie calls Grissom back to the lab: the Sheriff’s teenage goddaughter has been murdered and Mark Thayer, an entomologist known for manipulating evidence and juries, is testifying on behalf of the suspected killer. Grissom and Archie retrace all the steps of Thayer’s research to uncover how a fellow scientist contorted evidence to enable a killer to walk free.
