With Brass undergoing surgery after being shot in the chest, the team takes on two very strange cases without the help of their seasoned detective. Grissom is called from the hospital to the train tracks where a decapitated man in long johns is found. Peeking out of the severed neck is a bone-stump and a partially visible spinal cord clogged with oily dirt and dust. The CSIs note that the victim has an extremely small waist (19-inches). Back at the lab, Dr. Robbins confirms that the victim was shot with a musket, and later dropped at the tracks. Hodges confirms that there are traces of pomegranate extract on the victim’s clothes. He says that this was used to dye clothing in the eighteen hundreds. Nick realizes that the bone fragments found at the scene are whale bone, most commonly used in waist-cinching corsets. The team agrees that their victim had a civil war obsession that included his participation in a fair share of fighting. Sara identifies their victim as Caleb Carson. Sophia speaks with his personal assistant/ driver Gregory Kimble to get more details. Kimble states that the last time he saw Caleb was yesterday before his duel with a union soldier. With a case that can be defined as a “blast from the past,” the team recreates history while awaiting news that Brass is ok.

Meanwhile, Catherine investigates the death of Manny Rupert. His cause of death is overindulgence; she found him splayed out on a hotel room bed flanked by endless amounts of cocaine, strawberry icing, Viagra, and various kinds of post-party debris. Catherine finds broken glass from a mirror with blood traces on it. Warrick ties pubic hair and excretions found in the bed to a female. He also confirms that the blood found on the mirror is from a female. Catherine identifies Manny’s partner as hooker Sindee Houston. Sindee says the date was great at first, until she tried to leave. Manny became angry and shot at the mirror several times. Sindee states that she left immediately; in fear for her life. Warrick interrogates the victim’s sister Darcy. Darcy says that Manny was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic. She believes that he knew he was going to die, and killed himself by literally partying to death. Catherine and Warrick continue to question their suspects in order to solve the case.

Later in the episode, the team arrives at the hospital to find that Brass has made it through surgery and will live. However, when one of the team members steps out of the hospital they are attacked by an unidentified assailant.
