Picnicking at a neighborhood park, Karen Matthews realizes her young son Jesse has vanished. The CSI team responds, interviewing witnesses and searching for signs of the boy. Jesse is later spotted in a convenience store with a couple, and the male fits the description given by witnesses in the park. Brass arrests the couple, who claim to be Jesse’s genetic parents. DNA proves them right, and suspicion switches to Karen herself. However, when toothbrush DNA reveals Karen does have a son, the CSIs search for the real Jesse Matthews, and discover how far a mother will go to protect her kin.

Meanwhile, Grissom discloses to Catherine the story of his father’s mysterious death. Kelly Gordon, recently released from prison, pays Nick a visit at the lab.
