In a city not built for rain, flash floods wreak havoc in Vegas, and Catherine, Warrick and Grissom are called to the scene when a body turns up outside a storm drainpipe. They are able to ascertain that their original victim went surfing Vegas style – armed with an inner tube, he jumped into the flood control channel, was swept away and got sucked down the storm drain, where he died. But during their investigation they also find evidence that someone else has died underground – sanitation workers have found multiple bone fragments belonging to at least one human.
The entire team is pressed into service to try and discover who flushed the bones down a toilet, tub or sink or threw them directly down a manhole. Dr. Robbins ascertains that the bones belong to a teenage boy, and this leads to a search of all the missing persons reports filed, and the neighborhood that they have determined to be the possible dumpsite.
Ultimately Sara and Warrick they find themselves at the house of the neighborhood bully, Owen Durbin, who lives directly behind the sewer where the main skeleton were found. The family isn’t inclined to cooperate, and as the team searches the house, they find blood evidence – but as Sara begins to process, Warrick sees something she doesn’t – the closet where the bloodstains have led her is rigged with multiple pipe bombs, but that’s just the first salvo the Durbins have planned for unwelcome guests.
And Greg, who failed is first proficiency test, gets a second chance from Grissom, makes it through his first autopsy, but he may not make it through the latest Grissom experiment.
